World Cup newcomers Cape Verde pulled off a remarkable upset on Monday by holding European champions Spain to a goalless draw in their opening Group H match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Despite being among the tournament favourites, Spain failed to break down a determined Cape Verde side in Atlanta, with veteran goalkeeper Vozinha delivering an outstanding performance between the posts.
The 40-year-old shot-stopper made seven crucial saves to frustrate the 2010 World Cup winners and preserve a memorable point for his country.
Spain dominated possession throughout the encounter, controlling 74 percent of the ball and creating sustained pressure around the Cape Verde goal. However, Luis de la Fuente’s side struggled to convert their dominance into goals against the resilient debutants.
Even the introduction of Lamine Yamal from the bench failed to provide the breakthrough Spain desperately sought.
For Cape Verde, the result marked a historic achievement. The Blue Sharks, as they are popularly known, were playing in their first-ever World Cup match after qualifying for the expanded 48-team tournament.
The island nation, with a population of around 525,000, entered the competition as one of the tournament's biggest outsiders but defied expectations with a disciplined and spirited display.
At the final whistle, Cape Verde’s players and supporters celebrated wildly after securing a famous draw against one of world football’s traditional powerhouses.
Elsewhere on Monday, Saudi Arabia were scheduled to face Uruguay in another Group H fixture in Miami, while Belgium were set to take on Egypt, led by Mohamed Salah, in a Group G clash in Seattle.
