Bayern Munich delivered a strong performance to defeat Real Madrid 2-1 in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on Tuesday night.
The German side dominated large spells of the encounter, with Harry Kane playing a decisive role, registering a goal and an assist. Luis Díaz also found the net for Bayern, while Kylian Mbappé scored the lone goal for the hosts.
Both teams created several chances in an open contest, but wastefulness in front of goal proved costly—particularly for Bayern’s Serge Gnabry and Madrid’s attacking duo of Vinícius Júnior and Mbappé.
Bayern broke the deadlock in the 41st minute after capitalising on a midfield error, with Kane setting up Díaz for a composed finish past goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.
The visitors doubled their advantage early in the second half when Kane fired a clinical strike into the bottom corner, putting Vincent Kompany’s side firmly in control.
Madrid pushed for a comeback, introducing Jude Bellingham, but were repeatedly denied by veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who produced a standout performance.
Mbappé eventually pulled one back in the 74th minute, finishing from close range after a precise assist from Trent Alexander-Arnold. However, the hosts could not find an equaliser as Bayern held on to secure the win and end Madrid’s nine-match unbeaten run in this European fixture.
Both sides will meet again at the Allianz Arena for the decisive second leg.
Arsenal edge Sporting late
In another quarter-final clash, Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Sporting CP, thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Kai Havertz.
The late goal gives the Gunners a crucial advantage heading into the return leg in London.
