Three Cross River university students, staff member killed in fatal road crash

Three students and a staff member of the University of Cross River State have lost their lives in a road accident that occurred along the Calabar–Itu highway on Friday night.

Reports indicate that a coaster bus conveying students collided with a truck in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State, leading to the fatal crash.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Onen Ebri, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Saturday. He said a total of 24 people, including a staff member, were on board the vehicle at the time of the accident.

According to initial reports, most of the victims were members of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) who were returning from an official engagement held in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State.

The deceased have been identified as Solomon Uya, the SUG Director of Sports; Lucky Erim, President of the Faculty of Physical Sciences Students’ Association; Favour Darlington of the Department of Educational Management; Anthony Arikpo, the driver of the bus; and an unnamed staff member of the institution.

Ebri added that survivors of the crash are currently receiving treatment in various hospitals, noting that the university is ensuring they get adequate medical attention.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Francisca Bassey, alongside the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Stella Maris-Okey, visited the injured students in hospital to offer support and solidarity.

According to the statement, the Vice-Chancellor assured the victims of the institution’s commitment to their recovery and continued welfare.

The university community has been thrown into mourning following the tragic loss, while efforts continue to support those still undergoing treatment.
