June 12 Remains Symbol of Democratic Struggle — Abia Labour Party

The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party has described June 12 as a lasting symbol of the collective struggle for freedom, justice, and the right of citizens to freely choose their leaders through democratic processes.

In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by the State Chairman, Peter Azubuike, the party said the day remains a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for the restoration and sustenance of democracy in Nigeria.

The party noted that as residents of Abia continue to experience what it described as the dividends of democracy under Governor Alex Otti, it is important for citizens to remain actively involved in the democratic process.

It stressed that democracy can only thrive when citizens participate fully in elections and civic responsibilities.

The Labour Party also called on eligible residents of the state to take advantage of the ongoing Independent National Electoral Commission Continuous Voter Registration exercise to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

It particularly urged young people who have recently turned 18 to register and become active participants in shaping the future of the state and the country.

“The PVC is more than a card; it is the most powerful democratic instrument in the hands of the people. It is the tool through which citizens elect leaders, hold governments accountable, protect good governance, and safeguard the future of generations yet unborn,” the party said.

The party warned that failure to register could silence the democratic voice of eligible citizens and urged all Abians not to neglect their civic responsibility.

It also called on community leaders, religious bodies, youth groups, market associations, artisans, transport unions, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to support voter sensitisation efforts and encourage widespread participation in the registration exercise.

As Democracy Day is observed, the party reminded citizens that sustaining democracy goes beyond enjoying its benefits, stressing that it requires active engagement, vigilance, and commitment from all Nigerians.

It concluded by urging residents to strengthen democratic values and support efforts aimed at improving governance and securing a better future for Abia State through active voter participation.
