US urges citizens in UK to stay alert amid rising security concerns

The United States Embassy in the United Kingdom has issued a fresh security advisory calling on American citizens to remain vigilant while in the country, amid rising concerns over potential security threats.

In a statement released on Friday, the embassy advised US nationals to “keep a low profile, remain aware of their surroundings, and review personal security plans,” stressing the importance of caution in public spaces such as schools, hospitals, places of worship, tourist attractions, and transport hubs.

It also encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activity or online threats to the relevant authorities.

The advisory follows the United Kingdom’s decision to raise its national terrorism threat level from “substantial” to “severe,” a classification that indicates an attack is considered highly likely.

The change comes after a stabbing incident in Golders Green, north London, which police have officially classified as a terrorist attack. The incident, which targeted members of the Jewish community, has intensified public concern and led to increased security measures across parts of the country.

A 45-year-old suspect, identified as Essa Suleiman, a Somali-born British national, has been charged with several offences, including attempted murder. He is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on May 15.

UK authorities, however, clarified that the decision to raise the threat level was not based solely on the Golders Green incident. Officials said it reflects a broader and evolving security landscape, with risks linked to both radical Islamist networks and extreme right-wing groups operating within the country.

Security officials noted that the UK last operated at a “severe” threat level in November 2021, following a series of violent incidents, including the Liverpool Women’s Hospital bombing and the killing of Sir David Amess.

Authorities described the latest advisory as a precautionary step aimed at strengthening public awareness and preventing possible attacks, while urging citizens to remain cautious without panic.
