US Congress Urges Diplomatic Engagement With Nigeria Over Nnamdi Kanu’s Case

US Congress Urges Diplomatic Engagement With Nigeria Over Nnamdi Kanu’s Case

The United States Congress has called on the Secretary of State to engage the Nigerian government over the trial, conviction, and imprisonment of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The move followed a resolution passed on May 22, 2026, introduced by Congressman John James.

Lawmakers urged Nigerian authorities to ensure that all legal proceedings involving Kanu comply fully with constitutional requirements and international human rights obligations.

Kanu was sentenced to life imprisonment on November 20, 2025, by an Abuja Federal High Court after being convicted on terrorism charges. He is currently serving his sentence in a prison in Sokoto.

He and his legal team have rejected the ruling, arguing that the conviction was based on repealed laws, and have filed an appeal that is yet to be heard.

The resolution also raised concerns about Kanu’s detention conditions, including the distance of the prison from Abuja, where his appeal is expected to be heard.

US lawmakers referenced findings from the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which previously stated that Kanu’s detention violated international human rights standards and called for his release.

The resolution urged Nigeria to review those findings and ensure access to legal representation, adequate medical care, and humane treatment.

It also encouraged the US Secretary of State to engage Nigerian authorities on issues relating to due process and detention conditions, while reaffirming America’s commitment to human rights and the rule of law globally.
