Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez has stated that the friendly match against the Super Eagles of Nigeria will not influence his selection for the team’s opening game at the FIFA World Cup.

Martínez made the clarification as Portugal prepares for the friendly, with all 26 invited players now in camp and available for selection.

The squad includes a strong group of players from Paris Saint-Germain—Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, João Neves, and Gonçalo Ramos—who joined the team ahead of the fixture against Chile.

Matheus Nunes is expected to return to full training on Sunday after missing the Chile match due to fitness concerns, while João Félix is also being considered for the clash against Nigeria.

Speaking after Portugal’s 2–1 win over Chile, Martínez explained that the focus is on preparing the entire squad for the World Cup rather than prioritising specific opponents.

When asked whether the lineup against Nigeria would be influenced by the opening World Cup game against the Democratic Republic of Congo, he told O Jogo that team selection remains focused on overall readiness.

He said: “No, no. We now have the four PSG players arriving, along with Matheus Nunes, and we expect to have all 26 or 27 players ready for the second game. We continue with individual preparation.”

Martínez added that the aim is to ensure all players are fully prepared for the tournament, rather than tailoring preparations to a single fixture.

Portugal will face the Democratic Republic of Congo at the NRG Stadium in Houston on Wednesday, June 17, as part of their World Cup build-up schedule.
