Police Arrest Man Over Alleged Defilement of 8-Year-Old Girl in Abia Community

The Abia State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Stephen Njoku over the alleged defilement of an 8-year-old girl in Ebem Ohafia, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.

Njoku, who is said to be about 50 years old, was first apprehended by youths of the Ebem community before being handed over to the police. He was later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Umuahia for further investigation.

The victim has been taken to a hospital, where she is currently receiving medical attention.

The incident sparked widespread outrage in the community, leading to a protest by about 200 women who marched through the area demanding justice for the child. The women were seen carrying fresh leaves as they carried out a traditional protest known locally as “Ikpa Mbogo” against the suspect.

In response, the Ebem Ohafia Development Union (EODU) condemned the alleged act, describing it as disturbing, unacceptable, and completely against the values, traditions, and moral standards of the community.

In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Ifeanyi Okali, the union stressed that Ebem Ohafia maintains zero tolerance for any form of abuse, exploitation, or violation of children’s rights and dignity.

The group also appealed to residents, particularly the protesting women, to remain calm, noting that the matter is already under investigation by the relevant security authorities responsible for ensuring justice through due process.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said police officers visited the scene and arrested the suspect.

She added that Njoku would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
