Police Arrest 780 as PSG Champions League Celebrations Turn Violent Across France

French authorities have confirmed the arrest of 780 people across the country as celebrations of Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League victory over Arsenal descended into violence in several cities.

Thousands of fans had taken to the streets of Paris and other locations to celebrate PSG’s triumph, but the festivities were marred by clashes between some groups and security forces.

Around 22,000 police officers were deployed nationwide following concerns about possible unrest, similar to incidents recorded during last year’s celebrations.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, speaking at a press briefing, said 57 security personnel were injured during the disturbances, while 219 participants also sustained injuries across the country, including eight in serious condition.

Authorities also reported a fatal road accident involving a young man riding a motocross bike on the Paris ring road. The Paris public prosecutor’s office further confirmed that another person was critically injured in the capital after being attacked with a bladed weapon.

Nunez noted that the 780 arrests represented a 32 percent increase compared to arrests made during celebrations of PSG’s Champions League success the previous year.

While PSG’s victory sparked widespread jubilation, authorities said pockets of violence overshadowed what was expected to be a largely peaceful celebration.
