Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has disclosed that construction of the proposed Umuahia Stadium City is expected to begin before the end of the year.
The governor made the announcement on Sunday while hosting Super Eagles winger and Abia-born football star Samuel Chukwueze at the Government House in Umuahia.
Chukwueze visited the governor alongside friends to appreciate him for his support and presence during the burial of his late mother.
Speaking during the visit, Otti revealed that land for the project had already been secured and that the state government was currently conducting feasibility studies.
According to him, the project goes beyond the construction of a football stadium and is designed as a comprehensive sports and recreational hub.
“We are not just building a stadium; we are building a stadium city, like a sports village. There will be hotels, residential estates, and other facilities that will transform the entire corridor,” he said.
The governor also encouraged Abia indigenes to take advantage of investment opportunities within the state, assuring them of government support and priority consideration.
He commended Chukwueze for his achievements in football and for positively representing Abia State on the global stage.
Otti further expressed sympathy over the loss of the footballer’s mother and encouraged him to remain strong.
Responding, Chukwueze praised the governor for the visible transformation taking place across the state, particularly in road infrastructure.
He described the proposed Stadium City as a significant investment in sports development and said it would create opportunities for young talents across Abia.
The AC Milan winger also pledged to contribute to sports development in the state, saying he was already working on initiatives aimed at empowering young people through sports.
“It is my home, and I can never forget where I came from. I am committed to giving back to the community that helped shape my journey,” he said.
