Nigerian students have recorded a remarkable achievement at the 10th Huawei Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Competition Global Finals held in Shenzhen, China, where they secured multiple top honours in one of the world’s largest technology talent contests.
According to a statement released by Huawei on Tuesday, Nigerian teams won two Grand Prizes, two First Prizes, and one Second Prize at the global competition, which took place from June 2 to 5, 2026.
The company reported that more than 201,000 students from over 100 countries and regions participated in the contest under the theme “Connection, Glory, Future,” with over 6,000 entrants representing Nigeria.
After progressing through national and regional qualifiers, five Nigerian teams made up of 15 students from institutions including Ahmadu Bello University, University of Port Harcourt, University of Lagos, Federal University of Technology Minna, Igbinedion University, and Nasarawa State University reached the global finals.
The teams competed across four categories: Network, Cloud, Computing, and Innovation.
Nigeria’s outstanding performance saw it clinch two Grand Prizes in the Innovation and Network tracks, while its two Cloud teams secured First Prizes. Another team also earned a Second Prize in the Computing category.
Huawei described the result as historic, noting that Nigeria became the first country in the competition’s history to produce two all-female teams that both won Grand Prizes.
In a statement, the company said: “Nigeria further etched its name in the competition’s history by being the first and only country to produce two all-female teams that both won Grand Prizes.”
A highlight of the awards ceremony was the presentation of trophies to the winning teams by Nigeria’s Consul-General in Guangzhou, Mairo Musa Abbas.
Huawei said the presence of a senior diplomatic official underscored the national significance of the achievement and highlighted Nigeria’s growing reputation in digital innovation and talent development.
One of the standout projects was the Grand Prize-winning Innovation Team’s solution, “Paravision,” an artificial intelligence-powered healthcare system developed using Huawei technologies.
The project is designed to improve diagnosis and treatment of malaria and intestinal parasites, earning praise from judges for both its technical quality and real-world application.
Huawei noted: “A pivotal moment during the competition was the Innovation Team’s Grand Prize win with ‘Paravision’, an AI-driven healthcare solution built on Huawei’s cutting-edge tools.”
The company added that the success of the Nigerian teams reflects the rising strength of the country’s young tech talent, particularly women, in building solutions to real-world challenges.
“This victory sends a clear signal that Nigerian students, especially young women in technology, are not just end-users of technology; they are creating solutions, driving innovation, and shaping the digital future,” the statement said.
The ICT competition, launched in 2015, is an annual global programme that promotes technical skills development, innovation, and knowledge exchange among university students and lecturers.
It is recognised by the UNESCO Global Skills Academy as one of its flagship initiatives and has also been included among China’s national university competitions.
The latest success adds to Nigeria’s growing reputation in international technology competitions and reflects increasing investment in digital skills, artificial intelligence, and innovation across the country’s higher institutions.
