My social contract with Nigerians remains strong

President Bola Tinubu has reiterated that his administration’s social contract with Nigerians—covering security, economic reforms, and poverty reduction—remains firmly in place.

He made this known on Thursday at the 10th anniversary memorial lecture of the late Dr Olatunji Akintunde Braithwaite in Abuja. The President was represented at the event by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

Tinubu said his government remains committed to fulfilling its promises, adding that Dr Braithwaite would have contributed meaningfully to strengthening governance and national development if he were alive.

According to him, the administration’s programmes are deliberately designed to reach Nigerians at different levels, especially the most vulnerable. He cited conditional cash transfers targeting the poorest citizens, initiatives to promote cultural development, and rural development projects aimed at helping farmers move produce from rural areas to markets.

He also highlighted reforms in education and healthcare, noting efforts to expand access to university education for students from less privileged backgrounds, as well as healthcare support for pregnant women. In addition, he mentioned government-backed loans for small and medium-scale enterprises as part of broader economic empowerment efforts.

Tinubu further stressed that these policies reflect a wider vision to improve living standards across the country and ensure inclusive development.

The late Dr Braithwaite was also honoured for his role as a political activist and advocate for true federalism and governance restructuring. The President noted that Braithwaite consistently challenged the status quo and contributed to national debates on a more equitable Nigeria.

Former Osun State Governor, Bisi Akande, who chaired the event, also called on political leaders to emulate Braithwaite’s courage and integrity in leadership.

Akande said leadership should be rooted in truth, service, and accountability rather than personal gain. He emphasized that Nigeria’s progress depends on the character of its leaders, not just policies.

Speaking earlier, the daughter of the late Braithwaite, Omowunmi, said the memorial provided an opportunity to reconnect with her father’s legacy through stories, public records, and reflections on his contributions to national development.
