Media Experts Warn Journalists Against Fake News and Ethical Lapses

Media professionals have advised young and inexperienced journalists to avoid publishing unverified information, warning that fake news can result in serious legal actions.

The warning was given in Abuja on Monday during events marking the 100th anniversary of the Daily Times Newspaper.

The stakeholders stressed that no media organisation can survive political, economic, and technological changes without strict adherence to journalistic ethics.

Former spokesperson to ex-EFCC Chairman Ibrahim Magu, Tony Amokeodo, urged journalists to always rely on primary sources rather than secondary or unofficial reports.

He warned against what he described as “beer parlor rumours,” saying journalists must prioritise facts and credible sourcing to excel in the profession.

Amokeodo also expressed concern over the growing spread of misinformation on social media, where, according to him, “anything goes.”

He further argued that some individuals presenting themselves as journalists do not truly practise the profession in line with ethical standards.

Also speaking, Daily Times Managing Editor Charles Ozoemena warned that fake news could expose journalists to lawsuits, urging them to verify stories before sharing or publishing.

He criticised what he described as “lazy journalism,” where reporters circulate press releases or breaking news without proper confirmation.

Founder of Folio Media Group and Publisher of Daily Times, Fidelis Anosike, also emphasised the importance of consistency in journalism, saying excellence is achieved through continuous practice.

He noted that the future of journalism would be shaped by committed professionals who consistently build skills in writing, research, and storytelling.
