Man Utd Edge Liverpool in Thriller to Seal Champions League Qualification

Manchester United have secured Champions League football for next season after a thrilling 3-2 victory over arch-rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.

United raced into a 2-0 lead inside the opening 15 minutes through goals from Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko, before Liverpool fought back strongly in the second half to level the contest.

The result, however, was decided by Kobbie Mainoo, who struck the winning goal late on to seal a memorable win for the hosts.

The victory guarantees United a return to Europe’s elite competition after a two-year absence and strengthens Michael Carrick’s position as manager, following an impressive run since taking charge in January.

Mainoo, who recently signed a new five-year contract after previously being overlooked by Ruben Amorim, continued his strong form by scoring a composed winner from the edge of the box in a tense finish.

United currently sit third on the table, six points ahead of Liverpool, and are now assured of a top-five finish.

Despite the defeat—Liverpool’s 11th league loss of the season—Arne Slot’s side still remain in contention for Champions League qualification, needing just a few more points from their remaining fixtures.

Liverpool arrived at Old Trafford without key forwards Mohamed Salah, Hugo Ekitike, and Alexander Isak due to injury, which affected their attacking depth.

United made a fast start and took full advantage. Matheus Cunha opened the scoring with a powerful effort from distance that deflected off Alexis Mac Allister, leaving goalkeeper Freddie Woodman with no chance.

The pressure continued, and Benjamin Sesko soon added a second, bundling the ball in after a well-placed header from Bruno Fernandes created confusion in the Liverpool defence.

United could have extended their lead further before halftime, with Fernandes narrowly missing the target after a dangerous cross from Bryan Mbeumo.

However, Liverpool showed early signs of recovery before the break, with Cody Gakpo coming close on several occasions.

The momentum shifted immediately after halftime when United made a change, replacing Sesko with Amad Diallo. The substitution quickly proved costly as Liverpool capitalised on an error, with Dominik Szoboszlai intercepting a loose pass before finishing calmly to reduce the deficit.

United’s defensive mistakes continued to invite pressure, and Liverpool levelled when Alexis Mac Allister intercepted a poor pass from goalkeeper Senne Lammens. Szoboszlai then set up Gakpo for an easy equaliser.

With both teams pushing for a winner in an open and chaotic second half, it was United who struck again.

A poor clearance from Mac Allister fell kindly to Kobbie Mainoo, who kept his composure to slot the ball into the bottom corner and restore United’s lead.

The win marks United’s first league double over Liverpool since the 2015–16 season and highlights a significant turnaround in form compared to last year, when Liverpool finished well ahead of their rivals in the Premier League.

Carrick’s side has also recorded notable victories over Arsenal, Manchester City, and Chelsea during his short tenure, strengthening his case as he leads United into Champions League football once again.
