Kebbi Governor Launches Probe Into Teachers’ Salaries and Minimum Wage Implementation

The Governor of Kebbi State, Dr. Nasir Idris, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into teachers’ salary payments and the implementation of the new minimum wage, citing the need to uncover possible financial irregularities.

To carry out the probe, the governor on Monday inaugurated a seven-member committee chaired by Prof. Malami Shehu Gulumbe. The panel is tasked with examining salary structures and the application of the minimum wage for primary school teachers across the state.

During the inauguration at the Government House, Governor Idris reiterated his administration’s commitment to fairness and justice for teachers.

“I have a personal interest in this committee. I know how much the teachers were earning before, and I also know how much I approved as their new minimum wage,” he said.

He urged the committee to work diligently and objectively, stressing that no form of compromise would be tolerated in the exercise.

“I trust the committee members. That is why I carefully selected credible individuals who will do the job thoroughly and professionally,” he added.

The governor explained that the committee was set up following engagements with the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and discussions at a recent town hall meeting.

“Following our meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers and the outcome of the town hall meeting, I hereby inaugurate this committee to identify the actual grievances of primary school teachers regarding salary payments,” he said.

The committee’s mandate includes reviewing monthly funding allocations from local governments to Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs), particularly before and after the implementation of the new minimum wage.

It is also expected to determine whether any financial irregularities exist in the handling of funds meant for salary payments and wage implementation.

Other responsibilities include identifying individuals responsible for salary placement issues, assigning accountability where necessary, and distinguishing between professional and non-professional teachers to recommend appropriate corrective measures.

Members of the committee include Prof. Malami Shehu Gulumbe as Chairman, the Commissioner for Finance Abubakar Muhammad, representatives from the Ministry for Local Government, SUBEB, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), and the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), as well as the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs as secretary.

According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Malam Ahmed Idris, the committee has been given one month to submit its findings.
