The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it is over 87 per cent ready for the upcoming Enugu North Senatorial District by-election in Enugu State.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Enugu State, Dr Chukwuemeka Chukwu, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.
According to INEC’s timetable, the by-election is scheduled to hold on June 20, following the official notice and publication of the exercise released on May 21.
Dr Chukwu said non-sensitive election materials have already been sorted and are set to be distributed to the commission’s six local government area offices within the senatorial district.
He explained that the materials would be moved to the local government offices on June 3 and further deployed to Registration Area Centres (RACs) by June 4.
The REC also stated that all Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices have been fully configured and charged to ensure smooth accreditation during the election.
He added that INEC has concluded stakeholder engagements across the state, senatorial district, and local government areas, with active participation from political stakeholders.
According to him, the commission engaged with participants, addressed concerns, and provided clarifications on key aspects of the electoral process.
Dr Chukwu noted that four political parties are expected to participate in the by-election, although their names have not yet been officially confirmed pending approval from INEC headquarters regarding their primaries.
He further disclosed that training sessions for election officials will hold on Friday, as part of final preparations for the poll.
INEC also plans to hold security meetings with the police and other agencies to ensure adequate protection of personnel, materials, and voters during the exercise.
