The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Abia State Sector Command, has cautioned motorists against intimidating or harassing cyclists on roads across the state, urging them to give bicycle riders adequate space and respect.
The Sector Commander, Ngozi Ezeoma, gave the warning on Wednesday in Umuahia during the celebration of the 2026 United Nations World Cycling Day.
She noted that cyclists often struggle to find safe riding space on roads, as many motorists either deny them adequate room or fail to show them proper consideration.
Ezeoma called on state governors, local government chairmen, urban planners, and development partners to prioritise cycling-friendly infrastructure in road design and urban development projects.
According to her, roads should be designed for all users, not only vehicles, stressing the importance of creating space for cyclists as part of sustainable transportation planning.
She also highlighted the environmental and health benefits of cycling, noting that it helps reduce air pollution, ease traffic congestion, and promote physical fitness among citizens.
The FRSC boss further urged motorists to treat cyclists with courtesy and ensure they are given adequate space while sharing the road.
However, she reminded cyclists of the need to obey traffic regulations, including the use of helmets and reflective clothing to improve visibility and safety on the road.
In his remarks, the Abia State Commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Ukaegbu, encouraged residents, particularly young people, to embrace cycling as a means of transportation. He said it would help reduce carbon emissions and lessen dependence on fossil fuels.
