The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of five passengers, including a female child, in a lone road accident that occurred in Ebonyi State on Friday.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Ebonyi, Daniel Asanya, disclosed this in Abakaliki while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria.
According to him, the crash occurred at the Nkalagu axis of the Enugu–Abakaliki Federal Highway, specifically at Edema Bridge in Ishielu Local Government Area.
The accident involved a commercial Toyota Hiace bus with registration number RSH 231 XE, which was travelling from Abakaliki to Enugu with 17 passengers on board.
Asanya said the passengers comprised 12 males, four females, and one female child. Five persons died in the crash—four males and one female child—while 12 others sustained injuries, including eight males and four females.
He attributed the cause of the accident to speed violation.
Items recovered from the scene included three mobile phones, two personal bags, and a quarter bag of rice.
The injured victims were taken to Annunciation Hospital, Emene, Enugu, where they are currently receiving treatment, while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited in the morgue.
Asanya urged motorists to exercise caution while driving, especially along sections of the Enugu–Abakaliki highway where construction and maintenance work are ongoing.
He also advised drivers to obey speed limits and remain vigilant, noting that road maintenance activities are carried out for public safety.
In addition, he called on the construction company handling work on the highway to install illuminated warning signs to alert road users to ongoing repairs.
