FCT Police Begin Enforcement of Tinted Glass Ban, Impound Over 30 Vehicles

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has begun enforcing the ban on tinted glass vehicles as part of renewed efforts to curb rising criminal activities linked to “one-chance” gangs operating within the territory.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, made this known on Friday during a press briefing in Abuja.

Sanusi explained that several vehicles with tinted windows, concealed or covered number plates, and unregistered vehicles have been used by criminals to carry out offences across the city.

He noted that intelligence reports indicate that criminal elements operating in the nation’s capital deliberately rely on such vehicles to hide their identities, avoid detection, and frustrate police operations.

According to him, this development poses a serious threat to public safety and security in the FCT.

Following these findings, he said the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, directed the command to commence a comprehensive enforcement operation targeting all vehicles violating existing regulations.

The police commissioner stressed that the exercise is not aimed at inconveniencing law-abiding citizens who have obtained proper approval for tinted glass permits, but rather to deny criminals the advantage they exploit to commit crimes against residents.

Sanusi further disclosed that more than 30 vehicles have already been impounded for offences including illegal tinted glass use, covered number plates, and failure to meet registration requirements.

He added that the owners and operators of the affected vehicles will be prosecuted in court in line with the Laws of the Federation and the FCT Road Transport Regulations (2023).
