Atiku Open to Stepping Aside for Consensus Candidate, Says He’ll Back Obi if Chosen

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has indicated his willingness to step aside for any consensus candidate that may emerge from the coalition being formed around the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi.
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Wednesday, where he spoke on efforts to build unity within the coalition and the process of selecting a presidential candidate.
Addressing questions on whether he would withdraw his ambition in the interest of unity, Atiku clarified that the priority should be on collective support rather than personal ambition.
“It’s not about stepping aside, but whether I would support. The first approach within the coalition is to reach a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then we will go for direct primaries, and I will support whoever emerges,” he said.
He stressed that consensus remains the preferred route for choosing the coalition’s candidate, noting that it would help strengthen unity within the group.
According to him, if consensus fails, the coalition will adopt a democratic process through elections to determine its flagbearer.
When asked directly if he would step aside for Peter Obi if he is considered more popular, Atiku maintained his stance, saying he is ready to back whoever emerges as the candidate.
“I will step aside for any winner,” he stated.
Pressed further on whether that position extends to Obi, Atiku responded affirmatively, saying, “Of course, if he is a contender, why not.”
