The Abia State Government has cautioned residents and the general public against a viral online message claiming that the Alex Otti Foundation is distributing ₦65,000 cash transfers as part of Governor Alex Otti’s birthday celebration.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, described the message as false, misleading, and fraudulent.
According to him, scammers have been circulating posts that read: “Gov Alex Otti 61st Birthday Celebration Cash Transfer – Gov Alex Otti Giving Out ₦65,000 to Nigerians… Powered by: Otti Foundation.”
Ukoha stressed that neither the Abia State Government, Governor Alex Otti, nor the Alex Otti Foundation has approved, launched, or endorsed any birthday giveaway, cash transfer programme, or ₦65,000 payment through any website or online link.
He clarified that no such official programme currently exists and urged the public to disregard the claims.
The statement further warned that the websites linked to the message are fraudulent phishing platforms designed to obtain sensitive information from unsuspecting individuals.
“These are phishing sites designed to steal personal information, bank details, BVN, OTPs, and money from unsuspecting victims,” Ukoha said.
He noted that anyone who clicks on the links or submits personal information risks financial loss, identity theft, and unauthorised access to bank accounts and mobile money services.
The government advised residents to avoid interacting with the links and to refrain from sharing the message with others.
“Do not click the links or provide any personal or financial information,” he warned.
Ukoha also reminded the public that all official announcements, programmes, and information from the Abia State Government are released only through the government's official website and verified social media platforms.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and verify information through official channels before taking any action online.
