Abia Deputy Governor Denies Involvement in Afara Land Acquisition Allegations

The Office of the Deputy Governor of Abia State has refuted allegations circulating on social media suggesting that Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, FNSE, is involved in the alleged forceful acquisition of private land in Afara Community, Umuahia North Local Government Area.

In a press release dated June 2, 2026, the office described the claims as false, misleading, and capable of creating unnecessary tension among members of the public. It firmly stated that the Deputy Governor has no direct or indirect involvement in the matter.

According to the statement, the controversy being referenced stems from statutory development control operations carried out by the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), the agency legally responsible for regulating physical planning, urban development, and land-use compliance within the Umuahia Capital Territory.

The office explained that the UCDA issued official warning notices to some property owners and occupants whose developments were allegedly in violation of existing planning regulations. The notices reportedly cited relevant provisions of the Town and Country Planning Law and the Umuahia Capital Development Authority Law, while also giving affected individuals the opportunity to present valid approvals or take corrective action within a specified period.

It further stated that the enforcement exercise in the area extended beyond the demolition of illegal structures. According to the authority, part of the operation included clearing makeshift structures and identifying criminal hideouts, including a marijuana bunker allegedly operating along the affected corridor. The office said this underscored that the exercise was a lawful regulatory and environmental enforcement action carried out in the public interest, not a land acquisition scheme.

The statement emphasized that UCDA’s actions fall within its legal mandate and should not be misinterpreted as a private land takeover by any individual or public office holder.

It added that the Office of the Deputy Governor strongly rejects any attempt to associate Engr. Emetu with the activities of the development authority, noting that such claims have no factual basis and should be disregarded.

Reaffirming the position of the state government, the statement said the administration of Governor Alex Chioma Otti remains committed to the rule of law, due process, transparency, and the protection of citizens’ rights and property.

It stressed that government agencies must operate strictly within established laws, while also noting that affected persons have the right to seek clarification or pursue legal redress where necessary.

Residents of Afara Community and the general public were urged to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could cause panic or undermine confidence in public institutions.

The office concluded by reiterating its openness to constructive engagement and its commitment to justice, fairness, accountability, and responsible governance across the state.
