Abia Assembly Seeks Swift Justice for Slain Nursing Student Wendy Achumba

The Abia State House of Assembly has strongly condemned the rape and murder of 21-year-old nursing student, Wendy Achumba, and called for swift justice for the victim.

Achumba, a student of Our Lady of Mercy Nursing School, was reportedly raped and killed in her off-campus residence at Umuadara, Umulogho, in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State on May 22, 2026.

The call for justice came on Tuesday during a plenary session of the Assembly following a motion of urgent public importance moved by Hon. Ucheonye Stephen.

The lawmaker, who described the incident as tragic and disturbing, demanded a speedy conclusion of investigations into the case. He also commended security agencies and community stakeholders whose efforts led to the arrest of suspects linked to the crime.

Stephen urged the Inspector-General of Police, the Imo State Police Command, and other relevant security agencies to ensure a transparent, comprehensive, and diligent investigation, as well as the prosecution of anyone found culpable.

The lawmaker further called on the Imo State Government and relevant authorities to strengthen security measures around schools, student hostels, and off-campus residences to better protect students.

Responding to the motion, the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Emmanuel Emeruwa, described the loss of a young life under such circumstances as deeply painful.

He noted that investigations into the murder are ongoing and assured members that the House would engage with Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, on the matter.

The Assembly reiterated its commitment to ensuring that justice is served and that those responsible for the crime are held accountable.
