Zenith Bank Plc has commemorated the 2026 World Environment Day with a two-phase environmental clean-up initiative in Lagos State, as part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices. The programme was held under the global theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”
The first phase of the exercise took place on Wednesday, 3 June 2026, along Ajose Adeogun Street in Victoria Island, Lagos. Staff of the bank participated in a morning clean-up, clearing waste from the environment while also sensitising residents on proper waste disposal practices. The initiative was designed to strengthen community engagement and promote environmental responsibility.
The second phase followed on Thursday, 4 June 2026, with a waterways clean-up at Falomo Waterways in Ikoyi. The exercise was carried out in collaboration with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), focusing on the removal of marine debris and the promotion of cleaner waterways across the state.
Through the joint effort, the partners also reinforced broader climate resilience efforts aimed at protecting Lagos’ environment and reducing pollution in both land and water ecosystems.
Speaking on the initiative, the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank, Dame Dr. Adaora Umeoji, OON, said sustainability remains a core part of the bank’s operations and long-term vision.
She noted that environmental protection is a shared responsibility, adding that the clean-up activities demonstrate the importance of taking practical steps to preserve communities and support climate action. According to her, the bank will continue to align its operations with global environmental standards while encouraging wider participation in sustainability efforts across Nigeria and beyond.
Lagos Waste Management Authority and Lagos State Waterways Authority also played key roles in the waterways clean-up, contributing equipment, expertise, and coordination support to ensure the success of the exercise.
Zenith Bank reaffirmed its commitment to embedding Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles across its operations. The bank highlighted ongoing investments in green initiatives, energy efficiency, and community-focused programmes.
It also noted that these efforts align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action), as part of its broader sustainability agenda across Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and Europe.
