UI withdraws 226 students over poor CGPA

The Senate of the University of Ibadan (UI) has approved the withdrawal of 226 undergraduate students whose Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) fell below 1.0 for the 2024/2025 academic session.

The decision was reached at a Senate meeting held last Monday to ratify results for both graduating and non-graduating students. The Senate resolved that students with a CGPA below the minimum benchmark of 1.0 should be advised to withdraw from the institution.

Following the approval, affected students will no longer have access to the university’s portal for course registration and other academic activities.

The affected students span across faculties and levels, from 100 to 500 level.

An official of the university who spoke to The PUNCH disclosed that the Faculty of Science recorded the highest number, with 79 students asked to withdraw. This was followed by the Faculty of Technology with 45 students and the Faculty of Agriculture with 35.

The College of Medicine and the Faculty of Education recorded 18 affected students each, while Renewable Natural Resources had 10 students.

Other faculties impacted include Arts (nine students), Economics and Management Sciences (four), Law (three), Veterinary Medicine (two), and Environmental Design and Management (three).

The withdrawal of students over poor academic performance is an almost annual exercise at the institution, often referred to by students as a “tsunami.” In 2018, a total of 408 students were reportedly asked to withdraw under similar circumstances.

Meanwhile, newly admitted students resumed physically on campus on Monday for the commencement of the 2025/2026 academic session.
