President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, on Tuesday joined the Abia State Government, the family of Nigeria’s first Military Head of State, Major-General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, and other eminent Nigerians to commemorate the 60th memorial anniversary of the late military leader, while renewing calls for patriotism, national unity, and selfless service.

The memorial event, held on July 29, 2026, at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, drew a distinguished gathering of political leaders, military officers, traditional rulers, clerics, and members of the Aguiyi-Ironsi family. President Tinubu was represented by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.).

Governor Alex Otti, OFR, attended the ceremony alongside his deputy, His Excellency Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, FNSE, reaffirming the Abia State Government’s commitment to preserving the legacy of Major-General Aguiyi-Ironsi and promoting national unity, patriotism, and selfless service. Their participation underscored the administration’s dedication to preserving Nigeria’s history while fostering inclusive governance and national cohesion.

In his address, President Tinubu described Major-General Aguiyi-Ironsi as a patriotic leader who devoted his life to the service, unity, and stability of Nigeria during one of the country’s most difficult periods.

“Nigeria remains grateful for the invaluable sacrifices made by your distinguished son, husband, and father in the service of our fatherland.

“General Aguiyi-Ironsi was an outstanding professional soldier whose military career was defined by discipline, courage, loyalty, and an unwavering commitment to duty.

“His emergence as Head of State came at a time of great political uncertainty and national anxiety. Although his administration was brief, he remained committed to preserving national unity, restoring stability, and safeguarding the integrity of the Nigerian State.

“As we reflect on his legacy today, we are reminded that nation-building is an ongoing responsibility that spans generations. The values of patriotism, discipline, selfless service, integrity, and national unity that he embodied remain as relevant today as they were 60 years ago,” the President stated.

General Musa also praised Governor Otti for what he described as his visionary leadership and remarkable developmental achievements in Abia State, saying the Governor had set an example of purposeful governance.

“Your Excellency, our hardworking Governor, I want to sincerely thank you for the good work you have been doing.

“You have set a standard of governance that others should emulate. We have seen how meaningful development can be achieved quietly while improving the lives of the people. We appreciate your efforts, sir. I look forward to returning to celebrate your second-term inauguration,” he said.

Speaking at the event, Governor Otti described the late Aguiyi-Ironsi as a courageous and selfless leader whose sacrifice should inspire Nigerians to always place national interest above personal and sectional considerations.

“We came here to celebrate a man who gave his life for the rest of us. Personally, I believe we are stronger as one united country, working together, than divided,” the Governor said.

Governor Otti reiterated that his administration remains committed to merit, inclusiveness, and excellence, stressing that appointments into key government positions are based on competence, integrity, and capacity rather than ethnicity or state of origin. He cited the appointment of an indigene of Edo State as Abia’s Head of Service as evidence of his government’s commitment to merit-based leadership.

The Governor also paid tribute to former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, whom he described as a father and mentor. He acknowledged the contributions of former First Lady Dame Patience Goodluck Jonathan towards preserving Nigeria’s history and announced that Abia State would participate in the celebration of Chief Obasanjo’s 90th birthday on March 5, 2027.

In separate goodwill messages, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Chief of Army Staff, General Azubuike Onyeabo Ihejirika (Rtd.), and former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan described the memorial as a fitting tribute to a distinguished patriot who paid the supreme price in service to Nigeria.

They commended Governor Otti for supporting initiatives that promote peace, national unity, and the preservation of Nigeria’s history, while encouraging Nigerians to uphold the values of patriotism, sacrifice, and selfless service.

Presenting the citation of the late military leader, Mrs. Louisa Aguiyi-Ironsi described her father as a committed nationalist whose leadership was built on discipline, patriotism, meritocracy, and the professionalisation of the Armed Forces.

She explained that the memorial was not organised to reopen old divisions or glorify conflict but to honour sacrifice and inspire present and future leaders.

“This gathering is not intended for the mere performance of ceremonial rites. We have not assembled to reopen old debates or deepen historical divisions.

“This commemoration serves two important purposes. First, it stands as a solemn tribute to his personal sacrifice and unwavering commitment to a united Nigeria. Second, it is a call on present and future leaders to draw inspiration from that commitment. The Nigerian dream must be founded on justice, accountability, discipline, and the collective good,” she said.

In his vote of thanks, the late Head of State’s first son and former Minister of Defence, Ambassador Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu, Governor Otti, and all the dignitaries who attended the memorial in honour of his father. He also commended Governor Otti’s performance in office and expressed confidence that the Governor deserves a second term.

As part of the memorial activities, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Umuahia, Most Rev. Michael Kalu Ukpong, led members of the clergy in prayers before consecrating the tomb of Major-General Aguiyi-Ironsi at the Aguiyi-Ironsi Conference Centre, Umuahia.

The ceremony concluded with the laying of wreaths by the President’s representative, Governor Alex Otti, the representative of Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo and the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, Dame Patience Jonathan, members of the Aguiyi-Ironsi family, and other distinguished guests in honour of a leader remembered for making the ultimate sacrifice in service to Nigeria.
