The Super Falcons of Nigeria will face the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in a crucial quarter-final clash at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with a place in the semi-finals and qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup at stake.

The encounter will take place at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca at 6pm Nigerian time on Sunday, with the winner advancing to the last four and securing a World Cup ticket. The defeated side will instead enter the African play-off route in its bid to reach the tournament in Brazil.

Nigeria, the defending champions and record 10-time WAFCON winners, endured a challenging group-stage campaign.

The Falcons began their title defence with a 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi before responding with a 1-0 victory over Zambia.

Asisat Oshoala scored the decisive goal against Zambia, despite Nigeria playing more than 50 minutes with 10 players following Oluwatosin Demehin’s dismissal.

The Falcons then produced their strongest display of the group stage in their final match, defeating Egypt 6-2, with six different players getting on the scoresheet to secure second place in Group C.

Cameroon, meanwhile, topped Group D unbeaten.

The Lionesses opened their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Mali, with Marie Gisele Ngah Manga scoring twice. They followed that with a 1-0 win over Ghana, with Ngah Manga again finding the net from the penalty spot, before drawing 1-1 with debutants Cape Verde.

The two nations last met competitively at the 2022 WAFCON quarter-finals in Casablanca, where Rasheedat Ajibade’s 56th-minute goal sent Nigeria into the semi-finals.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s encounter, Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu said the team’s immediate priority was to secure qualification for the 2027 World Cup before turning its attention to retaining the continental title.

“Our objective remains picking the World Cup ticket and then going ahead to retain the trophy. Nothing has changed,” Madugu told reporters at a press conference in Casablanca on Saturday.

“We know what it means, and we will be ready for it.”

Midfielder Jennifer Echegini acknowledged that Nigeria still had defensive issues to address but said the team had used the group stage to work on its weaknesses.

“I feel like the teams we have faced have all gotten better as time and years have gone along,” Echegini told Elegbete TV.

“But definitely we have to look at ourselves and realise that some of the things that have happened, and some of the goals that have been scored, are quite unusual for us as a team.

“So we definitely worked on tightening the midfield, figuring out our back line, and other little stuff like that.”

Nigeria, ranked first in Africa and 36th in the world, enter the contest as the higher-ranked team. Cameroon, however, will draw confidence from their unbeaten run through the group stage.

The Lionesses, who finished runners-up in 2016, have not reached the WAFCON semi-finals since that edition and were absent from the 2024 tournament. Sunday’s encounter therefore presents Cameroon with a major opportunity to revive their continental campaign.
