Pastor Dolapo Lawal Warns Against Selling Assets for Low-Paying Jobs Abroad

Lead Pastor of Zoe Household Global, Dolapo Lawal, has advised Nigerians to think carefully before making life-changing decisions to relocate abroad, warning against acting on unrealistic expectations and unhealthy comparisons.

Speaking during a sermon on Sunday, the cleric addressed the growing trend of “Japa,” criticising the mindset driving many to leave the country in search of better opportunities.

He described covetousness as a major factor behind such decisions, noting that it often pushes individuals into choices that may not align with their long-term well-being.

According to Lawal, many people give up their established lives and sell off valuable assets in Nigeria, hoping for quick success abroad—only to face a different reality when they get there.

“It is covetousness that will make somebody sell their property in Nigeria and go to do a care job in America. Foolish thinking!” he said.

He also questioned the perception shaped by social media, where people abroad often portray a comfortable lifestyle.

“Because you are seeing people in the UK taking pictures, you think they are okay? You may get there, become stranded, and be unable to return because of shame, while chasing a life you don’t fully understand,” he said.

Lawal added that many Nigerians abroad endure financial pressure, sometimes saving for months just to maintain appearances during visits home.

He further challenged the belief that relocating automatically leads to wealth, urging people to reconsider their motivations.

“How many people have gone to the UK and become billionaires there? People are focused on gathering money to leave, but migration does not always lead to ownership or financial freedom,” he said.
