LASTMA Rescues 353 Road Accident Victims in Lagos Within Five Months

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has rescued 353 victims involved in road traffic accidents and other emergencies across the state within the first five months of 2026.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this while reviewing the activities of the agency’s Rescue and Emergency Response Unit.

The development was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq.

According to the agency, the rescued persons included 207 adult males, 137 adult females and nine male children.

Bakare-Oki said the figure reflected the dangers faced by road users, particularly during periods of harsh weather conditions.

He urged motorists, commercial drivers, motorcyclists and other road users to be more careful and strictly follow traffic rules as rainfall continues across Lagos State.

The LASTMA boss noted that the rainy season often creates dangerous driving conditions, including poor visibility, slippery roads, reduced tyre grip, flooded routes, vehicle faults and other factors that can lead to road crashes.

“While we take pride in the successful rescue of 353 individuals within the first five months of the year, these incidents equally serve as a reminder of the need for greater caution and responsibility on our roads, especially during the rainy season.

“A significant number of these crashes could have been avoided through responsible driving practices, compliance with speed limits, maintaining safe distances, avoiding dangerous overtaking and carrying out regular vehicle checks,” Bakare-Oki said.

He advised motorists to ensure that important vehicle components such as brakes, tyres, windscreen wipers, headlights, indicators and steering systems are properly maintained before travelling during heavy rainfall.

Bakare-Oki also warned drivers against speeding on wet roads, explaining that rain reduces tyre grip and increases stopping distances, making vehicles more likely to skid or collide.

He further cautioned motorists against driving through flooded roads without properly assessing the depth and safety of such areas.

The LASTMA general manager praised officers of the agency’s Rescue and Emergency Response Team for their quick response and professionalism during emergency situations.

He also appreciated the contributions of other emergency agencies, healthcare workers, security personnel and rescue partners who supported rescue operations.

“Every life preserved is of immeasurable value. We therefore urge all motorists to make safety their top priority during this rainy season.

“Strict compliance with traffic regulations and responsible road behaviour remain the most effective ways to prevent avoidable accidents and loss of lives,” he added.
