Hypo Not for Drinking, Firm Frowns Against Dangerous Trend

Multipro Enterprise Limited has cautioned Nigerians against the dangerous misuse of Hypo Bleach amid a growing online trend suggesting the product can be consumed.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its Marketing Manager, Adebayo Adeyemo, the company stressed that Hypo Bleach is strictly a cleaning product and should never be ingested under any circumstance.

“Hypo Bleach, Nigeria’s number one bleach brand, is formulated to remove stains, whiten white fabrics, deodorise and kill 99.9% of germs. It is not a drink.

“It is not something to consume for the sake of trends,” the statement read.

The company noted that it had observed videos and AI-generated images circulating online portraying Hypo as a beverage. It described such content as fabricated, misleading and highly dangerous.

“We want to be unambiguous: those images are fabricated, that framing is false, and anyone encouraging others to consume Hypo, even as a joke, even for views, is putting lives at risk,” the company said.

Hypo also appealed to influencers, bloggers and content creators to exercise responsibility when creating content.

“To every influencer, blogger, and content creator: Your reach is real. So is your responsibility. A trend that ends in ill-health is not a trend worth starting.”

Addressing young Nigerians directly, the firm warned against peer pressure and risky online challenges.

“You do not have to prove anything to anyone. Not online. Not offline. Not ever. If someone is pressuring you to try this, that is not a dare. That is harm.”

The company further encouraged individuals facing emotional challenges to seek help from trusted adults, counsellors or healthcare professionals, emphasising the need to prioritise mental health.

“Let’s keep social media fun, but safe,” the statement concluded, using the hashtag #HypoForASaferTomorrow.

The warning follows a heated online dispute between King Mitchy and VeryDarkMan. The disagreement reportedly began after Mitchy criticised VDM over school renovation projects and challenged him to provide N50 million to renovate four schools.

The controversy escalated when Mitchy allegedly appeared to drink a substance during a TikTok livestream, sparking panic and widespread speculation online. Reports initially circulated that she had taken her own life, but her management later clarified that she was alive, retracting earlier claims.

The situation intensified after VeryDarkMan was seen in a separate video taking a substance from a Hypo sachet in what many perceived as a reaction to the trend.

Since then, several content creators have reportedly mimicked the act in skits and videos, drawing strong criticism from parents, activists and concerned Nigerians, who have described the trend as disturbing and potentially harmful, particularly to younger social media users.
