Hausa Community Appeals to Abia Government for Larger Settlement in Aba

The leader of the Hausa community in Aba, Sariki Bello Shehu II, has presented some of the challenges facing Hausa traders and residents in the city to the Abia State Government.

Sarki Shehu, who led a delegation of community members to the Abia State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Umuahia on Wednesday, appealed to the state government to consider developing a larger settlement along the Osioma axis.

He explained that the proposed settlement would accommodate facilities such as a mosque, market, schools, and residential areas to better serve the growing Hausa population in Aba.

According to him, the increasing number of worshippers during Friday prayers often results in traffic congestion, making the need for a more suitable location necessary.

The Hausa community leader reaffirmed the support of his people for the Abia State Government and commended Governor Alex Otti and his Chief of Staff, Caleb Ajagba, for their intervention during recent security incidents involving Hausa traders in the state.

He also called for improved urban planning measures to address the conversion of residential buildings into commercial facilities, as well as the expansion of affordable metropolitan transportation services within Aba.

Receiving the delegation at his office, the Abia State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Uzor Nwachukwu, commended the Hausa community for their peaceful coexistence and contributions to the state.

The Commissioner assured them that the administration of Governor Alex Otti does not discriminate based on tribe, religion, or social background, adding that every lawful resident would continue to enjoy protection, support, and access to government welfare programmes.

Nwachukwu further stated that the state government would continue to work with relevant stakeholders to maintain peace, promote unity, and support the overall development of Abia State.
