The group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially come to an end, with 16 countries eliminated after failing to qualify for the tournament's Round of 32.

Among the most notable exits are Tunisia, Uruguay, Türkiye, Korea Republic and Scotland. Tournament debutants Uzbekistan and Curaçao also bowed out despite putting up determined performances during the group phase.

African teams enjoyed a strong campaign, with nine of the continent's 10 representatives advancing to the knockout stage. Tunisia was the only African nation eliminated, finishing bottom of Group F without earning a single point.

Several of the eliminated teams produced encouraging performances despite falling short of qualification.

Scotland finished third in Group C but missed out on a place among the best third-placed teams, while IR Iran exited the competition despite remaining unbeaten, recording three draws during the group stage.

Uruguay, which has reached the semi-finals in previous editions of the World Cup, suffered one of the tournament's biggest surprises after finishing third in Group H with just two points.

Korea Republic also failed to progress after placing third in Group A behind Mexico and South Africa.

With the group stage now complete, the Round of 32 gets underway on Sunday, as the remaining 32 nations battle for places in the Round of 16 of the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup.
