The Federal Government is set to launch a new digital television platform offering Nigerians access to 100 free-to-air television channels, marking a significant milestone in the country's renewed push toward full digital broadcasting.
The platform, scheduled for unveiling on Wednesday, is expected to inject fresh momentum into Nigeria's long-delayed Digital Switch Over (DSO) programme, an initiative aimed at migrating the nation from analogue to digital broadcasting.
The development follows a high-level stakeholders' meeting convened by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in Abuja. The meeting brought together key players across the broadcasting value chain, including regulators, television operators, signal distributors, satellite service providers, set-top box manufacturers, and content creators.
Speaking at the meeting, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to the successful implementation of the DSO programme, describing it as a transformative national project with far-reaching economic and social benefits.
According to the minister, the initiative extends beyond improved television viewing experiences. He noted that the digital transition is expected to stimulate economic growth, attract investment, create employment opportunities, and strengthen Nigeria's creative industry through increased local content production.
"The success of the DSO will not be measured simply by the deployment of digital infrastructure. It will be measured by the jobs created, businesses supported, local content produced, investments attracted, and the opportunities opened for future generations of Nigerians," Idris stated.
At the conclusion of deliberations, stakeholders endorsed a hybrid broadcasting model that integrates Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT), Direct-to-Home (DTH) satellite broadcasting, and digital application-based platforms. The participants emphasized that DTT remains a critical component of Nigeria's broadcasting ecosystem and should continue to play a central role in the country's digital migration agenda.
To accelerate implementation, stakeholders approved the reconstitution of the Digital Implementation Team (DigiTeam), which will coordinate activities and oversee the execution of agreed resolutions.
Participants also pledged support for initiatives aimed at creating jobs, encouraging indigenous manufacturing, and promoting locally produced content across television platforms.
Furthermore, the meeting directed the NBC to safeguard investments already made by set-top box manufacturers and other industry operators, while intensifying engagement with stakeholders to address lingering technical and regulatory challenges within the sector.
The Digital Switch Over programme was introduced to enhance broadcasting quality, expand channel availability, and unlock new opportunities within Nigeria's media and entertainment industry. However, its implementation has faced repeated delays arising from funding constraints, infrastructure gaps, and regulatory concerns.
With the launch of the new platform and the adoption of a renewed implementation strategy, the Federal Government is optimistic that Nigeria's long-awaited transition to digital broadcasting will finally gain the momentum needed to become a reality.
