Benin region faces month of 10-hour daily outages, says TCN

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Benin Region, has announced a planned power outage on the Benin–Ajaokuta 330kV Transmission Line to facilitate ongoing restringing works at the Ihovbor Power Plant Turn-In/Turn-Out Transmission Substation.

In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the company said the exercise commenced on Friday, February 27, 2026, and will run daily from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. until Tuesday, March 31, 2026.

“This exercise is essential to enable our contractor to continue the restringing works on the 330kV transmission line connected to the Ihovbor Power Plant,” the statement read.

TCN noted that the development will affect electricity supply in parts of the Benin region, as the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) will be unable to supply power to customers in UNIBEN, Oluku, Egba and Ihovbor areas for up to 10 hours daily during the project period.

“Please note that restringing activities will be suspended at 6:00 p.m. daily, after which the affected feeders will be restored. BEDC will be able to off-take electricity from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. the following day,” the company stated.

The transmission firm explained that the temporary interruptions are necessary because the high-voltage transmission line crosses major highways along the Benin–Ajaokuta axis, requiring strict safety measures during the works.

According to TCN, relevant road safety agencies have been duly notified and will remain on standby to ensure public safety throughout the construction period.

The company apologised for the inconvenience the outage may cause to customers and assured that full bulk power supply will be restored to the distribution company upon completion of the project.
