Abia Reaffirms Commitment to Better Healthcare as Obingwa General Hospital Nears Completion

The Abia State Government has reiterated its commitment to delivering accessible, affordable and quality healthcare services as renovation and upgrade works at the Obingwa General Hospital in Mgboko approach completion.

The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Uche, gave the assurance during a pre-completion inspection of the facility on Thursday. He explained that the hospital is among several general hospitals being renovated across the state and is one of the projects closest to completion.

According to him, the inspection was conducted to evaluate the progress of work and ensure the project is being executed in line with the vision and directives of Governor Alex Otti.

"We came to assess the level of completion of this facility, and we are pleased that it is almost ready. Installation of equipment has already begun, while some of the medical equipment has been delivered," Uche said.

"We are here to ensure that the project is delivered according to the approved design and in line with the aspirations and directives of His Excellency."

The commissioner disclosed that once completed and commissioned, the hospital will serve as a major referral centre for primary healthcare facilities in Obingwa and neighbouring communities, including parts of Aba.

He noted that the facility will provide specialised care for complicated pregnancies, surgical procedures, childhood illnesses and other medical conditions that cannot be effectively managed at primary healthcare centres.

Uche explained that the upgraded hospital is designed to function as a comprehensive healthcare facility, featuring a surgical theatre, eye and dental clinics, a modern laboratory, radiology and ultrasound units, delivery rooms, male, female and children's wards, a nutrition clinic, an accident and emergency unit, ambulance services, as well as amenity wards for patients seeking more personalised care.

He added that the project also includes residential accommodation for doctors and nurses, reliable water supply facilities and a stable power system, all in line with the governor's directive.

Describing the project as part of a broader healthcare transformation agenda, Uche said the ongoing improvements extend across the state.

"From Obingwa to Umuneochi, from Ukwa East to Arochukwu, from Ohafia to Ugwunagbo, and from Bende to Isuikwuato, healthcare transformation is taking place. It is a comprehensive approach aimed at ensuring that no community is left behind," he said.

Also speaking, the Chief Executive Officer of the Abia State Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Odochi Azubuike, said the inspection was necessary to ensure that the hospital meets the required standards before it is commissioned.

She revealed that work on the project began about a year ago and has recorded significant progress under the current administration.

"We are here to put the finishing touches on the project and carefully examine every aspect of the facility because proper supervision is vital to the successful delivery of any project," Azubuike said.

"I am proud to say that under the leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, Abia State has made remarkable progress in the healthcare sector."

She praised the governor's sustained commitment to improving healthcare, expressing confidence that residents would soon begin to enjoy the benefits of the administration's investments.

"All of us working with His Excellency are proud to be part of this transformational administration. Abians can already see that the Governor is fulfilling his promise to provide accessible, quality and affordable healthcare services to the people," she added.
