The Abia State Police Command has arrested 15 suspects and impounded 15 vehicles in its ongoing enforcement operation targeting unregistered vehicles and improperly displayed number plates across the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa.
According to the statement, the operation is being carried out in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police and forms part of the command’s efforts to strengthen security and public safety in the state.
Chinaka explained that the exercise focuses on vehicles without proper registration as well as those bearing obscured, altered, defaced, unlawfully covered, or otherwise irregular registration number plates.
She stated that during the period under review, police operatives successfully impounded 15 vehicles found to be in violation of vehicle registration and number plate regulations in different parts of Abia State.
The command also arrested 15 individuals linked to offences involving unregistered vehicles and tampered or improperly displayed number plates.
According to the police spokesperson, nine of the cases have already been charged to court, while investigations into the remaining cases are ongoing and will be concluded before prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, commended officers involved in the operation for maintaining professionalism and discipline throughout the exercise.
He noted that the enforcement campaign is designed to improve public safety, strengthen crime prevention efforts, and eliminate opportunities for criminal elements to exploit loopholes in vehicle identification systems.
Isa assured residents that all suspects arrested during the operation would be treated in accordance with constitutional provisions and due process.
He further reaffirmed the command’s commitment to transparency, professionalism, and strict adherence to the rule of law in carrying out the exercise.
The police commissioner also encouraged members of the public to report any cases of misconduct or unprofessional behaviour by officers through the Command’s Complaint Response Unit.
He advised motorists and vehicle owners across the state to comply fully with vehicle registration requirements and ensure their number plates are properly displayed, warning that the enforcement exercise remains active and ongoing throughout Abia State.
