Abia Assembly Summons Security Chiefs Over Rising Kidnapping, Security Concerns

The Abia State House of Assembly has resolved to invite heads of security agencies in the state for a crucial meeting aimed at addressing rising security concerns, particularly the increasing cases of kidnapping in parts of the state.
The resolution was unanimously adopted on Tuesday during the plenary session of the House.
The decision followed a motion on a matter of urgent public importance presented by the Deputy Speaker, Augustine Okezie Mmeregini, concerning the abduction of Mr Dennis Okechi Izuchukwu and Mrs Onyiyechi Ekechukwu by suspected gunmen at Umuawa, Alaocha community, Ohuhu, Umuahia North Local Government Area.
Mmeregini described the situation as a troubling rise in kidnapping and other criminal activities in Abia State. He urged the House to call on the Abia State Homeland Security Agency and other security agencies to intensify efforts toward protecting the lives and property of residents.
The Deputy Speaker also appealed to the House to encourage the Mayors of the 17 Local Government Areas in the state to revive and strengthen community vigilante groups within their respective areas.
He further called for traditional rulers and Presidents-General of communities across the state to be encouraged by the local government authorities to remain vigilant and play active roles in ensuring security within their communities.
While deliberating on the matter, the House, presided over by the Speaker, Emmanuel Emeruwa, described the security challenges raised as serious and requiring urgent attention.
The lawmakers supported the prayers presented by the Deputy Speaker and resolved to invite security chiefs in the state for an interface aimed at finding lasting solutions to the security challenges facing Abia residents.
