The Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Emmanuel Ihuoma Emeruwa, has assured the family of Miss Wendy Achumba, the slain nursing student from Abia State, that those responsible for her death will not escape justice.
Achumba, a 21-year-old student of Our Lady of Mercy Nursing School, Unuologho Obowo, Imo State, was allegedly raped and murdered at her off-campus residence, a development that sparked concern and outrage.
Emeruwa gave the assurance on Monday when he visited the family of the deceased at their residence in Aba.
The Speaker disclosed that the Abia State House of Assembly had recently discussed the matter during plenary, adding that lawmakers had moved a motion aimed at supporting efforts to ensure prompt action on the case.
He told the bereaved family that he had taken personal interest in the matter and assured them that the Assembly and the Abia State Government were committed to pursuing justice and ensuring that the suspected killers are brought to account.
Emeruwa stressed that the relevant authorities would continue to support efforts towards securing justice for the late student.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Rev. T. O. Ikpemmadu of the United Evangelical Church described Wendy’s death as a painful and devastating loss.
He, however, expressed appreciation to the Speaker and the Abia State Government for their intervention and commitment towards ensuring that justice is served in the matter.
