2027: Labour Party Would Secure Easy Victory in Abia if Election Held Today — Chairman

The Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) in Abia State, Peter Azubuike, has expressed confidence that the party is well-positioned to record a decisive victory in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking with journalists on Monday at the party’s state secretariat in Umuahia, Azubuike claimed that if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were to conduct an election today, the Labour Party would emerge victorious "before 2 p.m."

He attributed the party’s confidence to what he described as its strong grassroots presence across the state, adding that its internal disagreements had been resolved ahead of the next electoral cycle.

According to him, the Labour Party remains the most grassroots-oriented political party in Abia, with an extensive political structure spanning all parts of the state.

Azubuike pointed to the party’s current representation in government as evidence of its popularity, noting that it has 184 councillors, 17 local government chairmen and 20 members in the Abia State House of Assembly.

He said these numbers reflect the party’s widespread acceptance and strong support among the electorate.

The state chairman also said the party adopted the direct primary system for selecting candidates in order to promote transparency and prevent internal disputes ahead of the 2027 elections.

He dismissed claims that only one nomination form was sold in some constituencies, insisting that several aspirants purchased forms in a number of areas.

According to Azubuike, the primary process was competitive, adding that some serving lawmakers were unable to secure the party’s ticket.

He cited the Osisioma/Obingwa/Ugwunagbo Federal Constituency as an example, saying the incumbent lawmaker did not receive the party’s return ticket.

Azubuike stated that the Labour Party has continued to strengthen its structures from the ward level to the state level and remains optimistic about achieving another major electoral success in 2027.

He also maintained that the national leadership of the party under Senator Nenadi Usman is the faction recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

According to him, the party has already been granted access to the INEC portal for the upload of candidates, a development he described as confirmation of its recognition by the electoral body.

Azubuike reaffirmed the party’s commitment to internal democracy, grassroots mobilisation and effective leadership as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue.
